Abstract:The goal of this project was to evaluate whether virtual reality can contribute to the design process by stimulating movement, by asking the question: "How does a VR experience that stimulates physical movement in a creative environment, aid with the design process?" To answer this question, research was done through literature research, background research of the current state of the art, followed by an auto ethnographic study of virtual reality experiences that resulted in 5 themes. These themes were then applied in an iterative tinkering process which resulted in a final prototype, which was then evaluated with a A-B style within-subject testing user evaluation. The results show that the created prototype was well received and showed signs of increased movement. It has been concluded that virtual reality can indeed contribute to the design process, as it allows for embodied design methods that are not possible in the real world. There is a strong recommendation to continue research to evaluate how much of the themes contributed to increased movement. In addition, investigating the effect of types of music on movement could create a better understanding of how to improve on this aspect.
