| Abstract: | There is a consensus regarding the major environmental burden caused by our current economy. Our society needs to transition to a sustainable economy. In the pursuit of a sustainable economy, several transitions are initiated affect business models. Companies have to deal with both the energy transition and transition towards a circular economy(CE). The differences and similarities in the decision-making process of these transitions are identified to determine what is necessary for and the impact of each transition, to answer the research question: How can companies be supported in the decision-making process to transition towards a CE, concomitant with the energy transition? A tool is proposed to identify the risks, related to the transition, of links along the value chain. The tool evaluates the risks of their governance in relation to the environmental performance. The assessment should lead to better insight into the existing capability of the value chain to adapt. Companies are supported by being able to indicate and communicate the risks. The insights could lead to the reallocation of resources along the chain. Reallocation is necessary to overcome the risks of the adaptivity of links. Using the tool, companies can overcome their reluctance, which should accelerate the environmental transitions. |
