Abstract:The Spiritual Attitude and Involvement List (SAIL) is currently the most comprehensive instrument for spiritual wellbeing. It was developed as a psychometrically robust and content-valid instrument measuring 7 domains of spiritual wellbeing. An issue arising with the SAIL is its length which makes it inappropriate for various research settings and populations. To develop a comprehensive yet concise tool for spiritual wellbeing, the present study worked towards a unidimensional seven-item SAIL-SF, which ought to maintain the psychometrics of the original instrument. This study included secondary data of two datasets including nurses (N = 458) and cancer patients (N = 445) which were analysed in an iterative process. Therefore, the most representative items of each domain were preselected using CFA. Then, a focus group meeting was held to select the final items. Finally, parallel analyses, PCAs and Cronbach’s alpha analyses were adopted to determine the dimensionality and internal consistency of the final items. This process resulted in a seven-item SAIL-SF demonstrating essential unidimensionality with sufficient factor loadings and alpha coefficients. Nonetheless, the development of the scale is still in an early phase so that consecutive work is necessary to get a final understanding of its validity, utility and applicability in different contexts.
