Abstract:Pro-environmental behaviors (PEB) have been shown to be important in combating climate change, and compassion and mindfulness can enhance these behaviors. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between compassion, mindfulness, and PEB in daily life. In addition, a mediation effect of mindfulness on the relationship between compassion and PEB was hypothesized. For this purpose, 31 participants took part in the study, which was conducted using the Experience Sampling Method (ESM). Data were analyzed using Linear Mixed Modeling and revealed neither a significant relationship between the three study variables nor a significant mediation of mindfulness on the relationship between compassion and PEB within participants' daily experiences. We found that compassion, PEB, and mindfulness, as examined in this study, may not be related in participants' daily experiences. The construct of compassion as examined in this study was not related to daily PEB. In addition, mindfulness, which was measured as "running on automatic," may not be related to daily PEB. We believe that different facets of compassion and mindfulness may be related to PEB in daily life and that contextual factors need to be controlled or captured to identify their influence on PEB in daily life.
