Abstract:This present research study is about imagined victims and their perceived sincerity of an apology, given by the offender within the process of VOM. It was examined, to what extend the perceived sincerity affected the victims’ need for agency, the feelings of anger and fear and perceived trustworthiness regarding the offender. In addition, the effect of trustworthiness on the willingness to forgive, the need to avoid the offender and exert revenge is tested. It was expected that the perceived sincerity has a lowering effect on the need for agency and the feelings of fear and anger and an increasing effect on trustworthiness. Perceived trustworthiness was thought to also have an increasing effect on the willingness to forgive and a decreasing effect on avoidance and revenge. These expectations were tested by delivering either a sincere or insincere apology to the victims (total N= 99). It was found that the perceived sincerity of an apology just had a decreasing effect on the feeling of anger. Consistent with the hypotheses, the perceived sincerity increased the perceived trustworthiness and perceived trustworthiness also increased the willingness to forgive. In addition, perceived trustworthiness has a decreasing effect on the need to avoid the offender.
