| Abstract: | The present study aimed to investigate the influence of cues of harshness on risk-taking behaviour. Thereby influences during early childhood as well as situational cues were taken into account. It was hypothesized that immediate cues of harshness lead to increased risk-taking behaviour. Moreover, it was hypothesized that exposure to cues of harshness during early childhood positively affects the influence of situational cues on risk-taking behaviour. A between-subject experimental design was used to test these hypotheses. The sample consisted of 38 participants, who were exposed to one of two Virtual Reality scenes displaying different kinds of neighbourhoods (deprived vs. control). Risk-taking behaviour was measured by the Balloon Analogue Risk Task. Resource availability during childhood was measured using retrospective self-report in the form of a questionnaire. No significant results were obtained and both hypotheses had to be rejected. This indicates that situational cues of harshness and exposure to harshness during the early years of childhood do not have a significant effect on risk-taking behaviour. |
