| Abstract: | Insider threat, a crime that refers to data leakages or system manipulations, causing financial and reputational losses for multiple organizations. Although consequences of insider threats are known, investigations into organizational insider attacks are lacking. Therefore, the best ways to handle and react to insider threat suspects is not familiar, increasing mistakes in the behaviour and reactions of investigative interviewers. Therefore, this study assesses behavioural and emotional responses to error making in organizational investigative interviewing. More specifically, attention is drawn to emotional resilience and whether it influences stress and behavioural responses. The study was implemented as an experimental 2 (Error/ No error) x 2 (Accidental/ Deliberate insider threat) between-subject design, in which participants (N=112) were instructed to interview a suspect of insider threat. Results in this study illustrated no significant relationship between emotional resilience, stress perception or behavioural response. Moreover, also making an error or the presumed motive did not influence stress or behavioural responses. However, although no significant relationships on the dependent variables could be identified, this study stresses the importance of further research into error communication in organizational investigations. Based on this, correct handling of insider suspects but also consequences and preventions of insider threat can be assessed. |
