Abstract:System interoperability is an aspect of IT systems, it describes the ability of two or more IT systems or components to exchange information and use the information that has been exchanged. Within the logistics sector system interoperability is not well established between companies due to the way data is stored and communicated. Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) has been the main practice of sharing data between companies in the logistics sector. This paper focuses on the interoperability challenges observed with the UN/EDIFACT data standard and dives into the feasibility and applicability of the OpenTripModel as an alternative. The aim of this paper is to be a contribution to the body of knowledge regarding the decision-making process of migrating from an EDI-based data standard such as UN/EDIFACT standard to an API-based data standard such as the OpenTripModel.
