Abstract:Sputum amoxicillin concentrations do often not reach the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration when amoxicillin-clavulanic acid is administered oral or intravenous. The result is a reduction in effect on clinical outcomes. The aim of this study is to investigate if adequate sputum levels are obtained throughout the day after inhalation of nebulized amoxicillin-clavulanic acid in hospitalized AECOPD patients. Secondly, the tolerability of inhalation of nebulized amoxicillin-clavulanic acid is determined using a questionnaire. A multidose prospective study was conducted on 21 patients hospitalized with an acute exacerbation of COPD between September 2019 and July 2021. The patients were divided into two groups. Patients with amoxicillin sputum concentration ≥2 mg/L for more than 40% of the time and patients with amoxicillin sputum concentration < 2 mg/L for more than 40% of the time. Of the 21 patients, 15 patients had an amoxicillin sputum concentration ≥2 mg/L for more than 40% of the time (71%). No significant relationship between age, FEV1, gender, smoking status, or GOLD status was shown. Nebulized amoxicillin-clavulanic acid is tolerated by patients with an acute COPD exacerbation.
