Abstract:Self-help interventions have shown promising effects on prevention, detection, and early treatment of eating disorders, even though research is inconclusive regarding various treatment stages, age groups and guidance modalities. This systematic review examined the current state of the art, interventions’ suitability for adolescents, and the impact of guidance. Three databases were searched for studies describing self-help interventions focusing on the prevention, detection, and early treatment of eating disorders. The quality of studies was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) framework. Studies were reviewed and analysed regarding the predefined goals. Thirty studies fulfilled all criteria and described 21 programs. Most applied CBT principles for the prevention and early intervention of mainly bulimia nervosa, binge-eating or EDNOS in primarily females, even though other frameworks were also used. Detection was targeted once. Furthermore, 28 papers indicated significant symptom reductions in primary outcomes. Additionally, only five interventions addressed adolescent target groups, two of them using family-based therapy. Finally, guidance benefited intervention adherence and effectiveness. This review supports the value of self-help targeting early stages of eating disorders, but further research should address gaps regarding anorexia nervosa, adolescents, or the detection of eating disorders as well as contents of high quality guidance.
