Abstract:In this research, we optimize the planning of a pool of bulk trucks by applying a modified cheapest insertion heuristic for the multi-objective pickup and delivery open VRP with time windows for a homogeneous fleet with heterogeneous freights. Special about the VRP problem solved is that there is no central depot. The truck planning is obtained by simultaneously generating transport orders and assigning these transport orders to the bulk trucks. In order to decide which orders are performed by which bulk trucks we developed a modified cheapest insertion heuristic consisting of an order selection method and a priority rule. The cheapest insertion is based upon the truck-specific travel, waiting, and cleaning time. We conclude that the developed problem-solving method can be implemented to transport processes in which buffers (e.g., silos) are present and there is a demand (e.g., factory or customer) that should be fulfilled by non-compartmentalized homogeneous vehicles. However, the accuracy of the truck planning increases as the demand for transport increases, and therefore the number of trucks needed increases. Future research should focus on adding a simulated annealing improvement heuristic to the problem-solving method since we believe that this will further improve the truck planning.
