Abstract:The Best Possible Self (BPS) future intervention aims to increase wellbeing. Research revealed ambiguities whether the BPS future intervention is more effective for the wellbeing of younger people than elderlies. However, research did not yet explore the effects of age on the newly developed BPS past intervention. Consequently, the present study aimed to explore the effect of the BPS interventions on wellbeing and whether age moderates the effect. Participants were randomly allocated to the BPS future condition, BPS past/future condition, or active control condition. The two-week intervention was delivered using a mobile application. Participants had to complete tasks for five minutes per day. The levels of wellbeing were assessed four times using the “MHC-SF”. Outcomes revealed an increase in the participant’s wellbeing. However, the BPS interventions did not enhance wellbeing compared to the control condition. Results showed that age was not a moderator. The findings illustrate that thinking about past activities has a similar effect as the BPS interventions. Furthermore, the effects of the BPS interventions on wellbeing do not differ among age groups. Therefore, the temporal focus and the age are not of crucial relevance. However, as the present study displays limitations, there is a need for future research.
