Abstract:Streaming multiple TV show episodes on Video-on-Demand (VoD) platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime is becoming increasingly popular. Existing literature points out that people’s motivations to watch have an impact on their extent of VoD watching. Also, stress-related health issues could be influenced by the individual’s reasons to use VoD services. Therefore, the current study further examined the relationship between the amount of VoD watching and stress over time and the potential moderating role of motivations for watching. This experience sampling method (ESM) study had a sample size of 74 (Mage = 22.96; SDage = 5.51; range from 20 to 60 years; 17.6% male, 82.4% female). The Ethica mobile application was used for 14 days to administer two daily measurements about VoD watching, motivations and stress levels. The results indicate that VoD watching amount might be predicted both by the individual’s motivation and stress level in the morning. However, there was no significant effect between watching hours and stress levels the day after unless motivation was introduced as a moderator. These findings pose a starting point for further research using ESM studies, especially concerning the role of motivation for VoD watching and its impact on perceived stress.
