Abstract:Background: This study assessed symptoms of anxiety in young adult relatives (18-to-29-year-olds) of former ICU patients within the first 18 months following their release. A negative association between time and symptoms of anxiety was expected. Additionally, social self-efficacy was included as a moderator on the association of perceived social support and symptoms of anxiety. Methods: A convenience sample of 42 participants was included in the analysis with the majority being female and from Germany. A survey was administered using the anxiety subscale of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (α=.71), the Multidimensional Scale for Perceived Social Support (α=.90), and the social subscale of the Self-Efficacy Scale (α=.59). The association was tested using a linear regression model whereas the moderation analysis was assessed using a multiple regression model. Results: No significant association between time and anxiety could be noted (p=.44). Additionally, social self-efficacy was not found to be a moderator of the association between social support and anxiety (p=.51). Conclusion: The study indicated that young adults may differ in their utilization of social support and could benefit from receiving additional social support. Therefore, suggestions for future studies include focusing on specific personalities and different types of social support.
