Abstract:Queueing systems with overflow can be found in a variety of settings, such as telecommunications, call centers and health care. In overflow systems, jobs are routed to a secondary station if the primary station is fully occupied. This report considers a two-station overflow system with a serial structure, which means that jobs that complete service at the primary station can be transferred to the secondary station. This overflow system is studied under different assumptions (e.g. with and without call packing). First of all, the joint steady-state distribution of the number of jobs in the system is obtained, either by deriving a product-form solution or by applying a numerical algorithm. Next, blocking probabilities are computed, and it is examined whether the overflow system is insensitive to the service time distributions. Finally, a possible application of the overflow system is illustrated by describing how the system (in adapted form) can be used to analyze the interaction between an intensive care unit (ICU) and a step-down unit (SDU).
