Abstract:Malunion of the distal radius is surgically treated through a corrective osteotomy with recent introduction of 3D printed patient specific guides (PSGs). These 3D guides are made preoperatively using a CT-derived 3D model and postoperative evaluation is done using 2D X-ray images. This research aimed to (1) evaluate PSG usage and (2) optimize postoperative evaluation. (1) PSG usages was evaluated by researching the correlation between anatomical correction and postoperative range of motion. Other radiological, functional and patient rated measures were also investigated. The preliminary results of 4 patients showed a visual correlation, although this correlation could not be statistically verified. (2) Optimisation of postoperative evaluation was aimed to be achieved though development of an algorithm. By matching the proximal and distal radius segments of the 3D model to the postoperative X-ray image separately, 2 orientations are calculated. By using the surface of the preoperative 3D model and the orientations found based on the matching, a postoperative 3D model can be generated. Matching of the distal radius and identification of the proximal segments was finalized during this study. The total algorithm should be finalized before accuracy of the postoperative 3D models can be tested.
