Abstract:Turning off an electrical path in power electronic converters results in switch node ringing. Switching speeds are traditionally compromised in order to decrease ringing, increasing switching losses. By parasitic resonant tuning zero overshoot switching can be achieved where the switch node ringing is reduced to zero while allowing larger power loop inductance and fast turn-off speeds of switches. An expression is presented for the magnitude of the switch node ringing as a function the input current of a boost converter. Based on this equation it is found that multiple set-points for the input current exist, where the magnitude of the switch node ringing is equal to zero. Zero overshoot switching has the potential to remove all significant switching losses, enabling an order of magnitude increase in switching frequency while maintaining high efficiency allowing for smaller passive components and higher power density converters.
