Abstract:The goal of this study is to support Platoon Commanders (PC) in their decision-making processes by increasing their situation awareness (SA) using artificial intelligence (AI). Recent developments at the Dutch Ministry of Defence provided Dutch commanders at platoon level with a large smartphone, called the Raptor, that increases the SA of the PC. This study creates an example of how AI can be used to add an interpretation of the current state of the battlefield and a projection of it in the near future to this Raptor. In this study a design has been made and turned into a prototype that adds the following functionalities to the Raptor: (1) checking whether sections divert form their plan, (2) predicting and checking the risk of friendly fire and, (3) predict the location of Improvised Explosive Devices and monitors whether sections approach these locations. The added functionalities were considered useful in practical scenarios and the subjects liked this kind way of information visualization because made the current situation understandable at a glance and indicated the impact on the rest of the mission. In general, the results from the evaluation show enough reasons to continue the development of the created functionalities and suggest that the proposed method is suitable to integrate higher-order SA requirements in an existing system.
