Abstract:Background Mobile phones have been developed to foster communication and can have a positive impact on romantic relationships. Ironically, while in the presence of a romantic partner, phone usage seems likely to hinder the relationship. Getting distracted by a phone in the presence of a partner is called partner phubbing, which can undermine conversations and decrease intimacy. In recent years, a growing interest in phubbing has led to new insights, mainly through quantitative research. The current research examines the perspective of partner phubbing of couples in a romantic relationship. The research question of the current study is: What is the couple perspective on (partner) phubbing and the perceived influence within the relationship? Method Five (N = 10) couples between 22 and 60 years participated in the study (M = 31.90, SD = 13.71). A mixed method has been used to determine the influence of partner phubbing in romantic relationships. Firstly, the Dutch version of the partner phubbing scale was used to measure partner phubbing. Secondly, participants were asked to write a love letter or break-up letter to their mobile phone to determine their perspectives on partner phubbing. Finally, a semi-structured interview was conducted among the couples to determine attitudes towards partner phubbing. Results Based on the partner phubbing scale, the participants experience partner phubbing ‘sometimes’ (M = 3.06, SD = .67). Five participants wrote a break-up letter and only one participant wrote a love letter. There are more arguments mentioned against mobile phones use than for mobile phone use. An argument against is: “Nowadays I find it annoying when you ask too much attention.”. Based on the interview, the mobile phone is predominantly described as neutral and disruptive. A quote coded as disruptive is: “When we are spending time together and the phone comes in between. That is annoying.”. Conclusion and discussion To answer the main question, it is found that participants experience partner phubbing and that this is seen as negative and neutral. It is recommended to research the intention and its role in partner phubbing in order to develop effective interventions. Examining both partners in a couple and using multiple methods has shown to be effective and is recommended for follow-up studies. The instructions for the love letter or break-up letter are seen as a limitation since participants described a broader context than intended.
