Abstract:The purpose of this project is to investigate an engineering approach of modelling a pool fire with CFD, meaning that attention will be placed on generating conservative results within a timely manner. There are three main objectives to this project. First, determining the most appropriate model to use throughout this project. Second, comparing results generated by two different soot models, namely the HE model and the Moss-brookes-Hall model (MBH). Third, investigating the possibility of deriving a meshing approach based on the mesh resolution guideline published by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and to start investigating whether this approach can be applied to pool fires with structures within. The results show that the steady diffusion flamelet (SDF) model is the most practical model to use for this project and this model is used throughout the rest of the project. For the soot models comparison, the HE model has shown predicting capabilities more superior than the MBH model. The mesh resolution study shows that all the five different grid resolution yielded similar trends.
