Abstract:University students are at risk of experiencing psychological ill-being. One theory that can be used to explain the development of ill-being is the Basic Psychological Needs Theory, which proposes that humans have three basic psychological needs. There is evidence of a link between the frustration of these three basic psychological needs and ill-being. Additionally, there are conflicting findings in research whether individual differences in need valence and need desire might influence how strong this link is. ‘Need valence’ is the importance persons assign to the satisfaction the basic psychological needs, whereas ‘need desire’ is the longing of persons to satisfy the basic psychological needs. The current study aimed to investigate whether there is a relationship between the frustration of basic psychological needs in the context of higher education and ill-being. Furthermore, it was examined whether need valence and need desire in the context of higher education have a moderation effect on this relationship. It was assumed that need desire would have a stronger moderation effect than need valence.
