| Abstract: | The unhealthy diets of adolescents in the western world are of increasing concern since there has been a high prevalence of overweight and low compliance with dietary guidelines among adolescents. The environment adolescents are in, especially the school environment, plays an important role on their diet choices. Most interventions aimed at improving the school food environment are still limited to changes in physical factors, but more research is needed on other elements of the food environment to further assist these interventions. The primary goal of this study was to determine the current food environment of a Dutch secondary school and the key factors that influence eating habits of the students at school. This study investigated the food environment of 1 Dutch secondary school that already implemented the Healthy School Canteen program. Semi-structured interviews were held with different stakeholders and digital questionnaire was distributed among students of the school. This study has determined bottlenecks of the food environment of a particular school, important factors for adolescents when buying food and suggestions from different stakeholders to improve the school food environment. Every school food environment is unique, therefore every situation should be examined separately with a holistic view, involving different stakeholders. |
