Abstract:The purpose of this study is to provide management at the purchasing department of a manufacturer of production machinery with adequate key performance indicators that may be used to monitor and steer purchasing operations. The generalized solution is a selection methodology and a framework for purchasing key performance indicators as well as a method on how to implement these. The general outline of the methodology involves defining purchasing strategy, goals and key performance indicators. The framework for key performance indicators is after the balanced scorecard. Put into practice, this solution contributes to practice by generating key performance indicators, thereby solving the managerial problem at the client company. Furthermore, the solution is based on an integration of theories by renowned authors in the field of purchasing, performance measurement and decision-making. Thereby contributing to existing theory on purchasing performance measurement by increasing its body of knowledge. The research design that led to this solution consists of five phases that address diverse topics, ultimately leading to key performance indicators and a general plan for implementing these. The fundamental core of this research design lies in combining literature on the topic of purchasing, performance measurement, and decision-making with field-expertise of management at the world’s leading manufacturer of production machinery.
