Abstract:This thesis examines how recursive and adaptive tendencies in strategic practice influence the strategic action of fast-growth SMEs in the healthcare sector. Strategy in its economic sense has been researched abundantly in the academic world. This study however, investigates strategy from a more sociological perspective through the concept of strategy-as-practice. So instead of merely focusing on the strategic effect-performance relationship, this thesis attempts to generate a more comprehensive and in-depth analysis of what actually takes place in strategic management. The two key components that form the basis for this analysis are recursiveness and adaptability. Based on a case study of two Dutch SMEs consisting of 8 interviews, observations of strategic meetings and an ethnographic methodology, four recursive and three adaptive tendencies were identified. Moreover, this study found that an adequate balance of recursive and adaptive tendencies is essential for firms that experience fast growth.
