Abstract:Rejection in online dating is common. Former studies suggest that self-compassion might protect mental wellbeing from harm through online dating rejection. Aims were further insight into experienced online dating rejection, mental wellbeing of online dating users, the potential relationship between experienced rejection in online dating and mental wellbeing, and the role of self-compassion in this. In an online survey, 140 participants reported demographics, online dating behavior, online dating rejection experience, mental wellbeing, and self-compassion. Possible associations and group differences were investigated with Spearman correlations and one-way ANOVA. A moderator analysis was conducted to examine whether self-compassion moderates a relationship between rejection and mental wellbeing. Most respondents experienced rejection in online dating sometimes. Gender, frequent and present online dating use, total and negative self-compassion were associated with rejection frequency. Mental wellbeing was associated with self-compassion but not with experienced rejection frequency. Self-compassion was no moderator. Being male, frequent and present online dating use increased the frequency to experience rejection. Frequent rejection experience was associated with lower self-compassion. Mental wellbeing was associated with self-compassion but experiencing rejection was not. Self-compassion was no moderator. The results suggest that people with low mental wellbeing or frequent rejection experience would profit from self-compassion training.
