| Abstract: | Research shows that people in many parts of the world demand more severe punishments for offenders although crime rates are dropping. However, there is a large demand for more measures aimed at the restoration of the injustice caused by a crime. The goal of this research is to investigate to what extent providing people with positive and negative information about restorative justice influences their orientations towards retributive and restorative justice. The insights of this research may help policymakers to be aware of confirmation bias when trying to educate people about justice approaches. Consequently, they may be better able to inform the public about restorative justice and implement restorative justice programmes. The results suggested that the retributive justice orientation of retributive-oriented people became weaker after reading the positive and negative information about restorative justice, which can be explained by the acquisition of knowledge about restorative justice. In contrast, the retributive justice orientation of restorative-oriented people became weaker after reading the positive and negative information, which can be explained by the confirmation bias. However, the restorative justice orientation of retributive- and restorative-oriented participants remained the same. Thus, this research proposes that informing the public about restorative justice is a good start but it is not sufficient to make people more restorative in their demands. Therefore, the results of this research serve as a starting point for further research. |
