Abstract:Over the last decades there has been an increase of the private security sector in the Netherlands as well as in other western countries. These developments have an impact on the public and can have consequences for how the police and government are perceived. Therefore, this study will look into how private police is perceived and how this is affected by trust in the Dutch National Police. The current study found that previous direct experiences and media reporting seem to have an influence on trust in the police. Furthermore, the participants were negative about the concept of private police, but were more positive about the idea of collaboration between private and public police. Research about private police is rather unexplored in the Netherlands, which is why this study can be considered a valuable exploration of the topic.
