Abstract:This paper examines the effect of board gender diversity on firm financial performance of U.K. listed firms in the period between 2015 and 2018. This study documents a positive and significant relationship between the percentage of women directors on boards and firm financial performance. This positive influence is mainly caused by the non-executive women directors, which suggests that the monitoring effect is more pronounced over the executive effect in this study. Moreover, boards with at least 30% women directors have a stronger impact on firm performance than boards with only one female director. These findings suggest that women directors enhance boards of director’s effectiveness, which are more pronounced when the critical mass is reached. This paper contributes to the limited and inconsistent U.K. gender diversity literature.
