Abstract:Insomnia is the most frequent sleep disorder among adolescents, which can be caused by many aspects. One of the most common causes of insomnia is stress. However, there appears to be a vicious cycle between insomnia and stress, which means that stress is a cause of insomnia, but also a consequence. The most used method to treat insomnia is the cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I). This research focuses on the effect of the CBT-I treatment on insomnia and stress, in which the relationship between insomnia and stress is also considered. In total, 116 participants (M=15.6, SD= 1.6 years) participated in this study. All were assigned to either group therapy (GT), guided internet therapy (IT) or waiting list (WL). In this paper, the GT and the IT groups were taken together into one treatment group. Assessments took place at three measuring moments. Insomnia was assessed by different sleep parameters from the actigraphy and the sleep diary and the HDSQi and CRSQ questionnaires. Stress was assessed by the stress questionnaire for children (Stress vragenlijst voor kinderen: SVK). The CBT-I treatment took place for 6 weeks and consisted of several elements to treat insomnia. A significant correlation was found between insomnia and stress. Furthermore, a significant difference was found between the treatment group and waitlist group after the CBT-I treatment concerning insomnia and stress, in which both factors reduced in the treatment group. Finally, there is some support that the reduction in insomnia has a mediating role in the effect of the CBT-I treatment on stress. In conclusion: The CBT-I treatment has a positive effect on insomnia and stress. Also, there appears to be a positive relationship between insomnia and stress. Finally, the effect of the CBT-I treatment on stress is partly mediated by the reduction in insomnia.
