Abstract:The aim of this thesis was to understand if coping plays a mediating role in possible differences in perceived distress and eustress between men and women. Distress is the 'negative' form of stress that can lead to burn-out and eustress is the 'positive' form of stress that results in constructive outcomes of stressful events. Coping styles were divided into two categories, "problem-focused" (PF) coping styles that represent ability used to change the problem, and "emotion-focused" (EF) coping styles that help control emotional arousal and anxiety that causes by the stressor. The 83 participants who participated are between the ages of 18 and 35, of which 61 (70.1%) are women and 26 (29.9%) are men. This study shows that women experience more distress than men and men experience more eustress than women, but this is not explained by the use of EF-coping styles and PF-coping styles. EF-coping is not related to distress, but PF-coping is related to eustress. Men do not use PF-coping styles more than women and women do not use EF-coping styles significantly more than men. This suggests that the use of a certain coping does not lead to the same result in both sexes.
