Abstract:The goal of this study is to find adaptions in the process design at Bolk Logistics Hengelo that streamline the material handling flow within its warehouse. In the problem statement, we conclude that efficiency can be increased at three points: outbound dock assignment, product storage allocation and a policy for releasing rides for picking. With help of literature, a binary programming model is constructed to solve the product storage allocation on a tactical level with a class based storage strategy with ten bulk storage zones. The outbound dock assignment is solved on an operational level by providing information for the planner. To realize savings of these adaptions in the real system, the policy for releasing rides has to be adapted. By means of discrete event simulation, multiple policies are evaluated. We conclude that the optimal policy release a ride for picking either at the booking time, or the arrival time of the external carrier, or earlier when expected picking time is high. We advise Bolk Logistics Hengelo to implement all three adaptions to their process. During the graduation assignment, the first two adaptions are already successfully implemented.
