Abstract:Minimal Invasive Surgeries (MIS) are widely used in the medical field. The skills for MIS are trained by using virtual reality (VR) simulators, but VR simulator training is rather unsystematic. This study tried to improve the efficiency of VR simulator training for MIS by analysing the influence of time pressure on the performance of participants. The performance was analyzed and predicted by using learning curves. 40 participants performed two laparoscopic tasks (cutting and lifting&grasping) on the VR simulator. 70 trials were performed with 35 trials per task. The trials were split into 3 phases: an initial phase (15 trials), a time pressure phase (10 trials) where participants were asked to do the task 20% faster and a removed time pressure phase (10 trials) where participants got the same instructions as in the initial phase. Results showed that participants showed the speed-accuracy tradeoff (SAT) in the time pressure phase: they completed the task 20% faster but made more mistakes at the same time. However, after time pressure was removed, participants were still as fast as in the time pressure phase while showing the same accuracy as in the initial phase.
