Abstract: | The research aimed to explore the future regulatory requirements during the period (2021-2030) regarding energy efficiency, renewable energy and GHG emissions at the EU level and their reflection on the Member States level such as the Netherlands, and their implications on Huhtamaki. It involved desk research of EU level directives, reports, national plans, compliance reports, energy and emissions data, etc., and stakeholder interviews. As the central findings, the future regulatory requirements at the EU and the Member States level encompass the energy and climate change targets of 2030, and specific obligations and measures to achieve the targets. Towards this pursuit, several directives are enforced at the Union level which specifies obligations for both the EU and the Member States. The progress at the level of Member States shall be monitored by the Commission through an integrated monitoring and reporting framework. The national regulations of the Netherlands are shaped by the EU and Member States level requirements. At the Huhtamaki level, the implications are anticipated mainly in terms of mandatory undertaking of CO2 reduction measures including renewable energy and energy-saving measures and declining free emission allowances.
