Abstract:Maintenance and inspection routines of concrete sewage systems become harder to execute as the multi-layer structure makes it difficult to access certain parts. Nowadays, the assessment of concrete pipes is performed using CCTV cameras. This limits the evaluation only to flaws that are visible at the inner surface of the sewers. The goal of this research is to analyze and to compare the signals recorded by various sensors which are developed for vibration or acoustic signal measurement. The outcome will help determining the most suitable sensor to be mounted on the in-pipe robot which will enable contactless assessment of the support substrate of a concrete structure. The impact-echo method has been used to generate Rayleigh, Primary and Secondary waves within a concrete plate. Vibration accelerometer, laser vibrometer, particle velocity sensor and microphone have been used to record the response of the structure after the impact was generated. It has been shown that when there is a void in the substrate, the generated Primary waves within the concrete structure decay slower as more energy is reflected at the interface of the concrete with air. When the substrate is undamaged the waves decay faster as more energy is absorbed by the substrate. Results showed that the microphone is the most suitable sensor to be mounted on an in-pipe inspection robot having the highest SNR of all contactless sensors, averaging 17.5dB. It has the highest ratio (1.86) between the decay of the waves of the damaged and undamaged substrate.
