Abstract:In 2014, the Dr. Horacio E. Oduber Hospital (HOH) in Aruba started a project called 'Hunto Miho', which means better together. With this project, HOH has aimed to move towards becoming one of the best hospitals in the region. The Emergency Department (ED) of HOH is attended by more than 34,000 patients per year and over 73% of the ED arrivals visit on the basis on self-referral. Self-referrals often do not have a health problem that requires ED care. The current ED performance is unknown, therefore HOH needs more numerical understanding regarding their ED performance and how to optimise the ED performance. The following research goal was composed: Providing insight into the current performance of the ED in the Dr. Horacio E. Obduber Hospital, resulting in recommendations on how to optimise the ED performance. With a context analysis, the bottlenecks were identified. Eight key performance indicators (KPIs) were selected, defined and measured to determine the current ED performance. The data analysis showed that the ED throughput time and waiting times scored low, possibly because of shortness in staff and many ED arrivals who do not need ED care. Three possible interventions to optimise the ED performance were considered: extending opening hours of the General Practitioner Station (GPS), appropriate use of the fast-track rooms and more personnel with different shifts.
