Abstract:PostNL ECS, the company where this MSc research assignment has been carried out, offers E-commerce services for small to medium-sized web shops. These services include storage of goods, order processing, packing of orders and after-sales services. To be able to process orders efficiently, an automated goods-to-man system has been bought. The products presented by this system require further processing on a processing line. The performance of this processing line is insufficient. In our research, we propose several interventions that aim to improve the performance of the processing line using techniques and methods from several research dimensions. The interventions include new layouts for the processing line, (online) line balancing and the automation of packing. We study the impact and financial advantages of these interventions using a simulation model and subsequently provide a comprehensive recommendation on the implementation of the proposed interventions.
