Abstract:After having a stroke, fatigue is one of the most common symptoms. How the development of the symptoms over time are, or why some people suffer from these symptoms and others not, is still unclear. The existence of a relationship between fatigue and depressive symptoms has already been established, but a lot of questions remain unanswered. In total 51 patients participated, of which 27 participants ultimately completed all measurement moments. There have been measurements at four moments (1 week, 3 months, 6 months and 12 months). Factors fatigue, depression, sleepiness, pain, cognition and stroke severity are included in this study. 28% of the total sample experienced fatigue, but looking at the sample of people who participated in all measure moments, it appears that 52% of the participants experienced fatigue. Selective dropout could be an explanation for these differences. About one third experiences depressive symptoms. Both fatigue and depression directly after the stroke, correlate with all the measurement moments of fatigue. Fatigue T1 therefore appears to be a predictor and explains 30% of the fatigue complains after 12 months. Depression T1 does not emerge as a predictor. The small sample size could be an explanation of these non-significant results.
