Abstract:Surgical site infections (SSIs) are surgical complications. Within breast surgery there are several variables that could influence the incidence of an SSI. One of these variables is the preoperative treatment with Bactroban nasal ointment that could reduce the risk of an SSI. The other is neoadjuvant chemotherapy that could increase the risk of an SSI. A retrospective cohort study was performed with patient data from surgeries performed between 2016-2018 at Medisch Spectrum Twente (MST), Enschede. A total of 826 patients were included in the study. A total of 552 (66.8%) patients used Bactroban preoperatively and 102 (12.3%) were treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Different risk factors were taken into account. The crude OR for neoadjuvant chemotherapy for the ablatio without prosthesis showed a higher risk for an SSI. The adjusted OR did not show a significant risk anymore. The OR for neoadjuvant chemotherapy for the lumpectomy could not be calculated since there were no events. For the Bactroban there were no significant results found for the lumpectomy nor for the ablatio. This cohort study tried to find the relation between two variables and the risk of an SSI. No significant relation could be found.
