Abstract:This study's aim was to investigate state feelings with the use of Experience Sampling. Feelings are a widely discussed topic but until now most emotion research was concerned with it as a trait. Thus we have a lot of scales which measure feelings as a Trait. Feelings are not steady, they are dynamic and change from moment to moment. Thus there is a need for a method which is able to capture the dynamic nature of state feelings. Experience Sampling Method (ESM) is a method that is often used for momentary assessments of feelings or behaviors. In contrast to cross-sectional designs, it allows us to measure feelings, the moment they occur and therefore allows for a broader understanding of participants emotional life. Russel and Watson & Tellegen (1985) suggested that feelings are not discrete entities rather they are dimensional. Surprisingly 1/5 of the general population shows signs of alexithymia. Participants were asked to fill out the Affect Grid via the Tiim Application for 7 days, at day 8, they had to fill out the PANAS and TAS20. It was shown that feelings do vary a lot and ESM appears to be a valid way to measure feelings. Participants with signs of alexityhmia seemed to have difficulties describing and differentiate between their different feelings.
