Abstract:In positive psychology, strengths-based interventions showed to be effective to improve students’ mental health. The knowledge of one’s own strengths, so the awareness and recognition of them, showed to be a crucial part in those interventions. Thus, the current study aimed to investigate to what extent strengths knowledge and well-being are related to each other. Based on previous research, it was expected that a better knowledge of one’s strengths would relate to a higher frequency of experienced positive emotions. This relationship was believed to be partially mediated by feelings of self-efficacy. Therefore, 130 German-speaking (mainly German and Dutch) university students were assessed using self-report questionnaires about their strengths, their general feelings of self-efficacy, and the frequency of experiencing positive emotions. Data was analysed with correlation and mediation analyses, the Sobel test, and the bootstrapping method. As expected, the results showed that knowing one’s strengths would lead to a higher frequency of positive emotions. Additionally, this relationship could be partially explained by feelings of self-efficacy. Altogether, this research suggested that the awareness and recognition of one’s own strengths might be an important factor leading to positive affect and therefore well-being. Thus, this research gave a possible solution how to improve well-being in students.
