Abstract:According to prior research, the experiences of patients undergoing bronchoscopy might be enhanced when a certain form of nature is present in the treatment room. The current study aimed to investigate whether stress and discomfort can be reduced for bronchoscopy patients by using a head mounted device that showed nature videos during bronchoscopy. A quasi experimental, between groups (nature and control) design was used and both self-reported and physiological data were obtained from the participants (n = 32). Participants in the nature condition were exposed to nature videos presented by a RelaxMaker. Control group participants underwent the bronchoscopy as in a usual treatment. A possible decreasing trend was found in stress and discomfort experienced by patients in the nature condition, compared to the control condition. However, more extensive research is needed to confirm this effect. For the duration of the procedure and fear for a future bronchoscopy, no effects were found. The trends found in the current study pointed to a possibly less stressful and more comfortable bronchoscopy experience when participants were exposed to nature videos on a RelaxMaker. It is recommended to further investigate this effect, include more variables and increase the power score of future studies about bronchoscopies.
