Abstract:Introduction: Mental health care is under pressure due to supply shortages. Interventions with good treatment results and lower costs are needed. Biofeedback offers potential, but the current state of affairs is unknown. There is, however, a report on a shift in treatment setting from clinical to home. Home treatment would mean that more patients can be helped and less use will be made of the treatment practice. To provide insight into the recent psychotherapeutic use of biofeedback clinically and at home for a range of mental disorders, this literature review is being conducted. Method: This study examined PubMed, PsycInfo, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and Scopus with the search strategy: (biofeedback) AND (mental health OR mental disorder OR clinical psychology OR clinical practice OR psychiatry) AND (treatment OR therapy OR psychotherapy OR intervention OR application OR training OR wearable OR ambulatory) NOT (neurofeedback) NOT (EEG) NOT (fMRi) NOT (animals) NOT (asthma) NOT (cancer) NOT (constipation) NOT (COPD) NOT (cystic fibrosis) NOT (dysmenorrhea) NOT (dysphonia) NOT (headache) NOT (incontinence) NOT (migraine) NOT (tinnitus). The search strategy was based on (1) biofeedback; (2) as a treatment intervention; and (3) focused on the treatment of mental disorders clinically and at home. Results: Of the 16 studies, most consisted of HRV or ADEM biofeedback (clinical and) at home with an average of 51 home sessions 1-2 times a day. Study designs range from RCTs to ABA experimental design and case studies. Half of them without a comparison condition, but a before and after measurement and often a follow-up. Biofeedback had positive effects in 11 of the 16 studies, 9 of which were significant. Effects were retained in 6 of the 8 follow-up studies and no effects were found in 2 studies. Predictive values have been found for the course of treatment, such as duration and frequency of treatment. Discussion: This research shows that effective deployment of biofeedback at home can be possible as follow-up research reinforces this development by investigating the use of biofeedback at home and relevant intervention and patient characteristics and developing treatment protocols. Single-case experimental designs can be used for this. In addition, the supported effect of medication and the replaceability of medication with biofeedback can be investigated for medication users. Finally, it appears that EDR-, EMG- and TEMP- biofeedback is hardly used in mental health care. This implies a research focus on HRV- and ADEM-biofeedback.
