Abstract:Background. Future imagination and identity development develop during adolescence. Future imagination is the ability to use the future as guideline for actions and thoughts in the present. Within future imagination, other concepts exist, like timehorizon; how far away in time you imagine yourself, and time valence; whether a person is optimistic or pessimistic about the future. Identity is the feeling of knowing who you are, how one sees oneself and how one judges oneself. Marcia developed 4 identity stadia, based on the presence or absence of exploration and commitment (achieved, moratorium, foreclosure, diffusion). The relation between identity status and future imagination amongst young adolescents is unclear. The main question used is how identity status manifests itself in the orientation towards the future among young-adolescents. We explore which identity status, time horizon and time valence the young adolescents experience. Method. 6 adolescents aged between 12 and 14 participated. A qualitative analysis of interviews about future imagination was conducted. The identity statuses were obtained based on the degree of exploration of and commitment with opinions and activities. The future valence was obtained through classifying the emotional reactions regarding the future between optimism, pessimism or neutral. The time horizon was obtained by determining how far in the future the adolescents imagined themselves. Results. Two young adolescents showed the moratorium status, which means they explored. The adolescents were positive with regards to the future. The majority reported to have concerns about school. With regards to the timehorizon, the majority of the adolescents imagined the close by future (5-10 years in the future) with reference to school. As to the living situation and relationships, they imagined the future more far away (11-20 or 20+ years in the future). Conclusion. In contrast to previous research, young adolescents can explore identity, this might be due to stimulation from the parents. The timehorizon might be domainspecific, because of the expected life-cyclus and the degree of fantasy in imaging the future. Timevalence seems domainspecific too. This might be due to the schoolsetting, demanding too much of the young adolescence. The context can help guide the young adolescents in their quest with regards to the identity development and future imagination.
