Abstract:Experienced feelings are commonly thought to be related to physiological changes (i.e. heart rate and skin conductance), but empirical support for this relation is inconsistent. In the present study, researchers examined the relation between the experienced feeling from the past minute and the corresponding average heart rate. For seven days, eighteen male and female participants wore a wristband that measured their heart rate and every two hours they were asked to fill in a online questionnaire on their phone. The questionnaire asked how they were feeling the past minute in terms of valence and arousal. Results showed no relation between heart rate and arousal or heart rate and valence. Because of the limited number of participants it would be unjustified to conclude that there is no relation between heart rate and experienced feelings. This research does give new directions for future research and offers an addition to previous research.
