Abstract:Thales, the company where this MSc research assignment has been carried out, offers radar systems in combination with after-sales performance-based service contracts. Thales takes responsibility for the supply chain performance to ensure the availability of spare parts and minimize system downtime at the customer. As a consequence, Thales needs to maintain spare part stock levels whose calculation is based on failure rate estimates. Given that operational failure data will be gathered in the coming years, this provides the ability to update the failure rate estimates and adapt spare part stock levels accordingly. Main goal is to reduce the probability of backorders and penalty costs if the failure rate appears to be higher than initially estimated. We study the impact and risks of using a well-known failure rate updating model and aim to find suitable parameters of this model by means of simulation experiments. We give guidelines about when and how to process the operational failure data and when to intervene in stock levels while considering different part characteristics.
