Abstract:Introduction: This research attempted to answer the question to what extent psychological and spiritual well-being are predictive in the course of psychopathology and well-being by patients with an eating disorder. An eating disorder is a serious psychiatric disorder that often leads to severe limitations and chronic conditions. There is growing support that well-being is an important dimension of the recovery in eating disorder patients. Psychological and spiritual well-being in particular seems to be important as predictors of the course of treatment. If this research proves to be so, it can be used more structurally to improve these aspects of well-being, in order to increase the effectiveness of the treatments. Method: The sample consisted of 203 female patients with an eating disorder who were followed during the first year of treatment at an eating disorder treatment center in the Netherlands. They have filled in questionnaires about general well-being (MHC-SF), general psychopathology (OQ-45) and eating disorder specific pathology (EDE-Q). The psychological and spiritual well-being (PGGS) was the independent variable in this study. The respondents were subdivided into four groups: 1) Complete data, this concerned the respondents for whom all measurements were an intermediate measurement, 2) Clinical admission, for the respondents who required a clinical admission during the first treatment year, 3) Completed, the respondents who completed the treatment in the first year and 4) drop-outs, these were the respondents who did not fill out the questionnaires anywhere in the first year of treatment while the treatment was not yet completed. Using the Kruskal-Wallis test and the one-way ANOVA, it was analyzed whether components of the PGGS were predictive for one of the four groups. In addition, with the help of the Repeated Measures ANOVA, we investigated the course of the complaints and well-being and examined which components of the psychological and spiritual well-being are predictive of their course. Results: Self-acceptance, inner strength and personal growth seems to have a predictive value on the need for clinical admission and/or the course of psychopathology and well-being. It is striking that the decrease in psychopathology is observed earlier than the increase in general well-being. It is also striking that the group that scores on average in this sample on the PGGS components generally improve the most. Conclusion: This research shows that psychological and spiritual well-being is generally not related to the course of psychopathology and well-being. Exceptions to this are self-acceptance, inner strength and personal growth. In subsequent research it is valuable to look further at how complaints and well-being influence each other and/or how the design of the treatment can contribute to reducing complaints and/or strengthening well-being.
