Abstract:Mindfulness Based Strengths Practice (MBSP) is a new program aimed at the general population, which combines mindfulness practice with character strengths training, in order to reach higher well-being and flourishing. Previous research showed promising results regarding the effects of the program, however, there is still not enough evidence of its implications, especially when implemented on employees. Previous research found that both more use of character strengths as well as a greater amount of mindfulness is associated with higher work engagement. Therefore, MBSP could potentially increase the extent of not only mindfulness and strengths use, but also work engagement. Research questions are first, whether the levels of mindfulness, strengths use as well as work engagement are higher after receiving the program, second, whether the use of character strengths mediates the relationship between mindfulness and work engagement and third, whether there is a relationship between adherence and program outcomes. The current pilot study entails the first implementation of MBSP on employees in the Netherlands. At the end of the program, both the extent of mindfulness and character strengths use but not work engagement were higher than at the beginning. Furthermore, no association between mindfulness, character strengths use, and work engagement was found and the mediation model could not be confirmed. There was also no relationship between the outcomes and self-reported adherence. Nevertheless, these results must be interpreted carefully, as the current study has some limitations. Especially, randomized controlled trials with different outcome measures, including measurements of specific character strengths and exploring long term effects, could still reveal the proposed outcomes and associations. Therefore, future research is very important to further examine the promising positive health outcomes found in previous research and potential positive effects for both employees and employers.
