Abstract:Purpose – The aim of this research is to gain knowledge on how the level of congruence or deviance in organisational culture within a supply chain affects the supply chain performance. It is an exploratory research that tries to discover new relationships. Design/methodology/approach – The study entailed four mix-methods case studies. 67 questionnaires and 11 interviews were conducted with respondents of the focal organisations and strategic suppliers; the respondents had top and middle management positions. The quantitative results were analysed via correlation and regression analysis. The findings were then triangulated through content analysis of the interviews. Findings – The results indicate a relationship between organisational culture and supply chain performance. Congruence in organisational culture between the focal organisation and strategic supplier has a positive effect on supply chain performance. On the flipside, deviance has a negative effect on supply chain performance. In the supply chain there is a significant positive relationship on supply chain performance when the focal organisation has an adhocracy culture. However, there is a significant negative relationship on supply chain performance when the focal organisation has a hierarchy culture. Research limitations/implications – As this was an exploratory research, a small sample size was appropriate. The sample size, however, has its limitations, as certain findings did show good results but were not significant. These findings were such that they justify further large-sample, large-scale hypothesis-testing. This could be a valuable insight with practical implications for improving supply chain performance. Originality/value – Most research projects about the effects of organisational culture on performance look at the effects of culture within the boundaries of one organisation. This research looks at the effects of organisational culture between two organisations within a direct supply chain.
