Abstract:Appearances play an important role in one’s personal life, but also in one’s professional life. The research in this paper therefore tries to find out if clothing appearance has an influence on trust in a business environment, more specifically if the formality and masculinity of an outfit matter in this. Research was conducted via a survey based on the methodology of the investment game. The survey randomly showed the respondents one of four outfits, representing formal-masculine, formal-feminine, informal-masculine, and informal-feminine. Then a question was asked, in order to indicate the level of trust. From the results it can be seen that the respondents mainly worked in higher management functions, that they have a preference for informal wear, and that women invest more money than men do. What can be concluded from the results of this research is that formality and masculinity of the outfit of a woman in a business environment do not matter on trust. However, one should still dress appropriately for the job or task they have in order to be perceived as credible.
