Abstract:The prevalence of peripheral arterial disease is rising. The major challenge in endovascular treatment in the femoral artery is in-stent restenosis. Local hemodynamics are known to be involved in the initiation of atherosclerotic plaques and might be of predictive value. In vivo blood flow quantification might contribute to an explanation of atherosclerotic disease progression and therefore stent patency. High frame rate contrast-enhanced ultrasound velocimetry (echoPIV) is a recent development in the quantification of human blood flow. Feasibility has been shown in healthy volunteers in the abdominal aorta. Before echoPIV can contribute to an explanation of femoral in-stent restenosis, feasibility must be determined in patients with peripheral arterial disease who received a stent in the femoral artery. Therefore a clinical feasibility study was set up and so far one patient did participate. EchoPIV measurements were performed successfully and the femoral arteries and the ultrasound contrast agents could be visualised. However, due to poor visualisation of the contrast agents PIV analysis could not be performed. Further research is required to draw any conclusions.
